The Chicks Have Made It Outside

Our chicks from the earlier blog have now made it outside and are growing fast. They will be moving from crumbs to adult food within a few weeks. We then have the job of sorting the cockerals from the hens. These have not yet learned to roost in a hen house, instead they have taken fancy to a garden bush.

Ex Battery Chickens Continue To Improve

Our rescued ex battery chickens have come on leaps and bounds over the last few weeks. They are now growing new feathers at an alarming rate, and have become the most friendly bunch of chickens we have, laying nice fresh eggs each day.

Ex Battery Hens Arrive

These are the recently rescued twelve ex battery hens. We collected these in early April. They have settled in very well and as you can see have already started to grow new feathers. We were most surprised that these lovely little hens continued to lay from the day we brought them home. It is amazing what a bit of space rather than a small metal cage does for them. They have their own enclosure with a large new hen house. Once again chipped bark as a base which gives them a lovely environment to peck and scrap around in.

In the picture above you can see what sort of condition these chickens are after leaving a battery unit.

You can also see their enclosure and beautiful hen house. We will keep you updated on the progress of our ex bats as they continue to develop and enjoy their new surroundings.

New Chicks Hatched

We have recently hatched some beautiful chicks. We inherited some already hatched from the local primary school, we purchased some fertile hatching eggs and very successfully hatched some of our own eggs. We have a mixture of hens and cockerels which as you can see are growing fast and will soon be ready to go into a new enclosure and enjoy the warm weather. Unfortunately our hens are all sold but if you are interested in a beautiful cockerel then please get in touch. We will update the blog as the new chicks venture outside for the first time.

Light Sussex Chickens

These are our beautiful group of Light Sussex chickens. We purchased these from a small producer in a nearby local village. They came as a group so we inherited a fully grown fertile cockerel as well. Great news for fertile eggs, bad news for a lie in on a Sunday morning. At the moment as you can see from the picture they are currently separated from the others in the main enclosure as we have our first order for fertile Light Sussex eggs. Normally these chickens live freely with our others in the main enclosure. If you are interested in fertile eggs then leave us a message and we will get in touch with you.

Edges Happy Hens

This is the 1st post to the Blog of the Edge Family Happy Hens. We started off with 3 ex battery hens which eleanor brought home and it has now grown to us having over 30 fully grown chickens and chicks which we have hatched. It is great fun and chickens are so easy to look after, and really appreciate you by laying you the most beautiful fresh eggs. This post concentrates on our main chickens and enclosure.
They had a new enclosure built earlier this year and are just awaiting delivery of their new five star hen house. We have mixed breeds in here but mainly hybrid chickens with 1 welsummer and 1 amber hen. They have loads of space and plenty of bark chippings to scrap around in. They also have some fruit trees in their enclosure which will keep them occupied trying to eat the fruit from them.
